Snow, Flash Freezes and Heavy rain on Christmas Eve!

A powerful arctic front will sweep across the East Christmas Eve producing snow and heavy rains. The weather ahead of the front will be mild with heavy rains across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Combined that with areas that had snow and some minor flooding may occur. Once the front moves through the rain will change over to snow and with low pressure running up along the front, enhanced snow will occur from West Virginia into Ontario, I think max amounts will be 6 inches but enhance lake effect may produce locally more snow.

As temperatures fall behind the front, flash freezes will occur which will cause roads to get icy. I will try to have a timing map of when temps fall.

  1. Good morning Henry. You had mentioned last week that the approaching arctic airmass was the result of a “wobble” in the polar vortex. Do you anticipate more “wobbling” and episodes of arctic air during the course of the winter or is this a one shot deal? How does the Arctic Oscillation (AO) play into this scenario? Thanks.
